 This revelation confirms Daniel's vision of the kingdom of God rolling forth to the ends of the earth (see Daniel 2). The keys of the kingdom are committed unto man to prepare the earth for the advent of the kingdom of heaven (see Background to D&C 65).

Book of Commandments Approved

During a conference in Hiram, Ohio, publication of the Book of Commandments is approved. Joseph receives both revelations on how to proceed with the publication (see Background to D&C 67 and Background to D&C 69) as well as the Lord's preface to the Book of Commandments (see Background to D&C 1). Elders seek and receive instructions in their responsibilities (see Background to D&C 68 and D&C 133).

JST Stalled to Deal with Ezra Booth

Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon postpone Bible translation efforts to preach and deal with apostate writings of Ezra Booth being published in the Ohio Star (see Background to D&C 71).

JST Resumed

Joseph and Sidney resume the work of translation (see Background to D&C 73). It is perhaps during this time that they receive the Lord's explanation about the meaning of 1 Corinthians 7:14 (see Background to D&C 74).

"The Vision" Received

In the presence of 12 other men, Joseph and Sidney receive "the vision" of the degrees of glory (see Background to D&C 76).

Various Events in March

The following events occurred sometime this month:

  • Joseph "received ... explanation of the Revelation of St. John" (History of the Church, 1:253; see Background to D&C 77).
  • Joseph receives instruction concerning the establishment of a storehouse for the poor. This revelation lays the groundwork for subsequent revelations that explain the law of consecration and the united order (see Background to D&C 78).
  • Jared Carter, Stephen Burnett, Eden Smith, and Jesse Gause receive specific callings (see Background to D&C 79Background to D&C 80, and Background to D&C 81).
  • D&C 81 is received. This section is "a step toward the formal organization of the First Presidency" (see Background to D&C 81).

Joseph and Sidney Attacked

A mob of more than 50 men tar and feather Joseph Smith and attack Sidney Rigdon. Joseph Murdock, Joseph and Emma's adopted infant son, dies five days later from exposure to cold during the incident (see Account).
